Modesty

1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array….

So lets break it down and see what some of these words actually mean:

1. Adorn:  beautifydeckdecorate, do up, fancy up, gussy up, ornament, pretty (up), trim (up). (The parentheses is what I added to emphasis the word.)

2. Modest: humble, shy, simple, homely, unpretentious, plain, unimposing, inexpensive.

3. Shamefacedness: very modest, shy, bashful, not vulgar, not crude,

4. Sobriety: earnest, grave, sober, serious, solemn, respect, quiet

5.  Not broided hair: woven, plaited, twisted together, a web.

6. Gold: a yellow precious metal,  used especially in jewelry and decoration

7. Pearl: a hard, lustrous spherical mass, formed within the shell of a pearl oyster or other bivalve mollusk and highly prized as a gem.

8.  Costly array: expensive article of wearing apparel.

I’ve lived a good 61 years and seen many a women and girls dress in all types of garments, jewelry, and in action.  Some women are above and beyond what the word of  God commands not to do. Of course if you are not saved, then you’re not going to give a second look or thought about what the word of God says.  However, I have to say I’ve also seen Chrisitian women and girls go to the extreme to look just like the world.  Now there is nothing wrong with dressing up, but when you dress to attract the stares of men and boys, and relish the comments of people of how you look so pretty or look so good in this and that, then that’s another thing.  Some women are oblivious to what they wear, until it is pointed out to them and because “it’s not hurting anyone,” they continue to dress inappropriately.  Years ago, as my family sat in church waiting for service to begin the choir comes filing in. One of the women in the choir had a spandex pants on, with her mid part spilling over and her crotch showing through her spandex pants.  I as a woman was so embarrassed  that my husband and sons had to sit there until the choir were done singing.  In other embarrassing moments for me to see while my men were present was a girl dressed in short skirt, 6 inch stiletto, lashes and makeup that looked like tar.  Other moments of embarrassment is when women who wear low cut blouses or dresses and lean forward and the ladies are revealed.  Single woman, married woman or girl, if your aim is to get the stares from men and boys, or  want praises from men and boys,  then it’s good to take a long look at yourself before actually going out.  Look at yourself in the mirror and ask, “Lord is this how you want me to dress or  is this how you want me to act.”  Does the word of God offend you in an area of your life,  in the way that you are dressing or acting, then it is time to change.  And if you haven’t a clue as to whether you are actually causing temptation it’s ok to ask the Lord to reveal it to you.  And lastly, do you want men or boys to treat you like a lady or like an object.  I was shopping one day and had on a nice skirt and nice modest blouse and a man, says out loud, “there’s a lady in the house.” I looked at him and said “excuse me,” he said you’re a lady.  Often times I notice that when I have either a skirt or dress own, men tend to open the door for you or allow you to go first.  lol.  Now that is a very humbling and shamefacedness experience.  We cannot really remember all the things that the Word of God tells us to do as women, but we can try our best to live it, when we remember what it says.
